We interrupt this tedious and stale chronology of summer trips for the important news that I am now an Award Winning Photographer. Last week, somebody on the photography mailing list at work declared his intention to start a series of minor contests. He picked a theme, "Sweet Things," gave people a week to submit something, then picked an overall winner (me) and some runners-up. There were 67 entries. My prize is to pick the theme for the next contest, and judge the next winner.
Cheesy though my picture may be, I will say in my defense that I was the first person submitting not to take the theme literally. Many entries were pictures of cookies or cupcakes or what have you. Who the little girl is, I don't know. She was at Steve's kid David's birthday party in April 2008, when he turned 2.
For the next contest, I picked "nothing gold can stay."

Chapter 5 in the ongoing series would have been the week I spent at sailing school in Berkeley. I had a really good time at that, but don't feel like talking about it just now. I have given away my secret plans to too many people as it is, I think.

cute pic...although do i need to point out that your picture also includes a picture of a cupcake? I would think your theme will result in a wider range of entries however. Reply |

Jeese Michael! If you're gonna win awards for your photography, I fully expect them to be pictures of your photogenic family. But I guess this one's good too... Reply |

Erin: yes, that is true. When I told somebody about the contest last week, she said, in fact, "Oh brother I bet it's all pictures of cupcakes and little girls." And I said, Well then I guess you're going to like mine. Reply |

Congratulations!. Something to add to your resume. So you're going with Robert Frost. I would have the winning picture if I had had my camera out yesterday. I went with Sister Kramer to pick apples in Glastonbury and as we drove down the tree-lined country lane a shower of bright yellow leaves catching the sunlight drifted down across the road and it was gorgeous. Sounds like a winner to me given the theme. Can I enter if I get a chance to retake the shot? Reply |

That is my 2 year old daughter on your website! Diana wrote on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 05:28 |

This is a picture of my daughter you took without my knowledge or permission and posted it to a contest on the internet, also without my awareness. Don't you think, considering we know the same people, you could have asked who she was and asked me if it was okay? I do not want pictures of my child on the internet and i am sure anyone with children, or basic reasoning can understand why. There are scary and dangerous people on the internet, especially those who target children. Please take this picture off your website. Reply |

As my sister had stated, this is her child, and for you to post pictures of someone else's children without any permission is illegal and also very dangerous for the child and their family. Clearly you have no understanding of what being a parent is, because then you would understand why children must be protected from these internet scams. What you have done is being reported in numerous places, so I suggent the picture gets removed. What kind of sicko are you taking pictures of little kids without parental consent? Reply |

Right. So I'm going to leave those comments up as an educational service to the internets. Photographers: If you didn't already know, parents will get hysterical like this from time to time. There is no need to worry overly much about it, because there is, in fact, nothing illegal whatsoever about taking photographs in a public place. See for example: http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm. I also recommend his book, Legal Handbook for Photographers. Diana/Sara: As I told you yesterday, I might well have cooperated if you had just asked nicely. But given the several threatening and abusive emails you sent instead, and now apparently hoping to embarrass me in public, I am not interested in anything more you have to say. Reply |

As a PARENT of TWO children...I find it OUTRAGEOUS that you would take pictures of children eating CUPCAKES without parental consent. There are people on the internet with CUPCAKE fetishes...some of whom may be pedophiles. At this very moment they may be tracking down the location of that or some other INNOCENT cupcake-eating child! Also, as an ATTORNEY I advise you to listen when people tell you things are illegal...they are ALMOST ALWAYS CORRECT. I have dedicated my career to ending these child cupcake SCAMS! Reply |

Given the anxiety and discomfort that parents feel when their child is being photographed without their consent, I think that we were very nice about it. I understand that you are a photographer and this is what you do everyday, but if it is hurting someone else, have you no consideration? Especially when a small child is at risk? All we are asking of you, is for privacy. You won your contest already, please take down the picture. Reply |

What is next? Are you going to strap a camera to a van and drive around town taking pictures of everyone's houses? And then post them on the internet for everyone to see? Entire towns maybe? Sicko. Reply |

This is the most hilarious thing I've read in a long time. Too bad there wasn't a cash prize - royalties might have been demanded. For all the pain and suffering. Reply |
