The Google hosted a small conference called MySQL Camp, where people came to talk about the MySQL database program which is commonly used to run web sites and so on. Running MySQL is a significant part of my job, so I helped give a 90 minute talk on how that is done at the Google. Several people in the audience wrote about it and/or took my picture, so I am famous again:
Here I am, and here I am again!
And me misidentified as my coworker!
I noticed something different giving this talk. If you have done these before, you know that you are given about 3 minutes of the audience's full attention just out of courtesy, but that's about all; you have to convince them pretty quick that you are worth listening to. Otherwise they will wander off to another session, read slashdot, or at least wish they had done one of the above. This time, I got the "worth listening to" pretty much for free. Presumably that's because the Google has a little more name recognition than Pomona College. So that was nice.
