"What does it feel like?" whispered Hermione.
Harry did not answer for a moment. Then, slowly but surely, an exhilarating sense of infinite opportunity stole through him; he felt as though he could have done anything, anything at all...
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
I woke up this morning to three interesting messages, each more unexpected than the last. First I had an email from Tom, who is a friend from high school that I have not seen or talked to in about ten years. He lives in San Francisco for the summer, which I had discovered while snooping around myspace, causing me to send him a myspace message, to which he immediately replied. So that was the least surprising message.
Then I found out that Alice is going to be here for an event this weekend, and she needs a photographer. This would be fun for me, besides which I would get paid. I used to play assistant for a couple of wedding photographers around LA, in the 2005 season. And Alice needs to hire photographers all the time for her stuff, of course, but these Hollywood type jobs are as fiercely competitive as you would guess, and obviously not appropriate for a joker like me, besides which she has a long list of regular people for the purpose. But this is a small event that's not so important, I guess, and it's out of town, so she doesn't already have somebody, so there you are.
The most surprising message came to my work email, which is the only one that the people from kickball know. [I don't know if I ever saw fit to mention it, but I played grown-up kickball last year. Here is photographic evidence.]

I was just curious...
you know who I am, but don't know my email addy...
I'm a little embarrassed and shy, but I have always thought u were cute....I'm from kickball...and please don't tell anyone...I can't believe I'm even writing this....
How very unlikely.
Being preoccupied with this apparent good fortune, I turned the wrong way when I got to work, into the convenient parking lot that is always full by 10:30am. But not today, since somebody had just vacated a spot in the row closest to my office. Word.
Then a few hours later, one of my coworkers came and brought me an envelope, which he said he found on the ground by the loading docks. This turned out to be the check reimbursing me for my Ireland trip, which had gone missing some weeks ago. I was certainly going to get it replaced, since I want that $5000 back, but it was going to take a while.
All very peculiar. Have you ever had a day like that?
